On October 30th the bi-annual CASA Day took place again, at BCN Eindhoven. Although unfortunately we didn’t have the big lecture room like a year ago, this was still a great fall location to host the event. Bjorn opened the day by introducing some new (and less new) faces who joined CASA since the last CASA Day in April. The program started with talks given by Karens group, the Computational Science group, where a large part of the group presented, covering a wide range of topics.

After this and a small coffee break, we had a presentation by Joost Gabriels, who is part of the Project Development Office at our department. It gave a broad overview of research funding in the Netherlands and Europe, which is good to know for everyone at CASA.

With this the morning program finished and after a quick lunch and the group picture taken, we went back to start on the afternoon program. This started with the second half of the scientific talks, given by Benjamin Sanderse’s group from CWI. They presented a nice overview of their work on scientific machine learning.

The last part of the day were the parallel sessions, one of which was given by Annika and Lisa on “Mathematics and Number in Music”, a very hands-on and fun workshop on the relationship between mathematics and music.

The other parallel session was an “Ultimate ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe competition”, given by Rafael and Michiel. This was a fun knock-out tournament of ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe, a harder variant of the classic “boter, kaas en eieren” game.

With this the program had finished, and we all went to a (rather short) dinner.
