Hello everyone, my name is Geert-Jan Rutten.
As of June 2025, I joined CASA as a Professor of Computational Neurosurgery. I have a background in physics and medicine, and I have been working as a neurosurgeon at ETZ Tilburg since 2007, with a clinical focus on neuro-oncology—particularly awake brain surgery—and deep brain stimulation.
In Tilburg, I lead a research group with two main research lines: cognition & well-being in brain tumour patients, and advanced neuroimaging. For more than ten years I have collaborated with TU/e, especially on the development of tractography for neurosurgical planning and the modelling of functional networks in the brain. My overarching research interest concerns the relationship between brain structure and function, and how this can support and improve neurosurgical decision-making.
I live in Tilburg with Lidy, Stijn, and a collection of animals. I will generally be at TU/e one day per week, usually on a Tuesday or Thursday. Feel free to contact me!
